What SASSA Checks on an SRD Application

The SRD application is checked against qualifying rules and monthly financial information before the result is finalised.

ID and personal details Your ID number, name, surname, age, and profile details may be checked against official records.
Age requirement SRD applicants must fall within the allowed age range for the grant.
Income and deposits Money received during the month can affect whether the system sees you as having insufficient means.
UIF or other support The monthly check can look for unemployment insurance or other support that affects qualification.
NSFAS or student funding Student funding records can affect the result if the system matches the applicant to support.
Other social grants Receiving another social grant for yourself can affect SRD qualification.
Banking details Banking checks can affect payment verification and may show money received in the month.
Identity verification Some applications may need e-KYC or biometric checks before the result can continue.

SRD Means Test

The SRD means test is the monthly check used to decide whether an SRD applicant still qualifies for that specific month. The income threshold is R624 per person per month.

This means money received into your bank account or mobile wallet during a specific month can affect that month’s SRD result if it places you above the R624 means-test threshold.

The means test can include income, bank deposits, UIF, NSFAS, other support, and other records used by the official system.

Practical meaning: If monthly checks detect income or support above R624 for that month, the SRD month may be declined for a means-test reason.

Why SRD Application Results Change Every Month

SRD is not approved once forever. Each month is assessed again, so your result can change depending on the checks for that month.

New monthly checks Each SRD month is checked separately before a result is finalised.
Money received that month A deposit or support received in one month can affect only that month’s result.
Official database matches UIF, NSFAS, other grants, or identity records can affect a specific month.
Verification still running The result can stay pending or referred while checks are not complete.

How Bank Deposits Can Affect an SRD Application

Bank-related checks can affect SRD because the system may treat money received into an account as income or financial support for that month.

This can include regular income, once-off deposits, money transfers, refunds, family support, or other payments detected during the monthly check.

Do not change banking details blindly. If your result is declined because of income or means-test checks, changing banking details does not automatically fix the declined month.

SRD Application Reapplication

If the official SRD portal asks you to reconfirm, reapply, or update application information, follow the official prompts carefully. Do not use copied links from WhatsApp groups or social media comments.

  1. Use the official SRD portal.
  2. Enter the correct ID number and SRD phone number.
  3. Check whether your profile details are correct.
  4. Update only details that are wrong or outdated.
  5. Check your SRD application status again after the update.

If Your SRD Application Is Declined

If your result is declined because of income, alternative support, UIF, NSFAS, or another application-check reason, first read the exact decline reason for that month.

  1. Check the declined month.
  2. Read the exact decline reason.
  3. Think about what money or support was detected for that month.
  4. Do not appeal before understanding the reason.
  5. If the result looks wrong, use the official appeal route for that declined month.

Use the SASSA SRD appeal guide if you believe the declined result is wrong.

If Your SRD Application Is Pending

Pending usually means the monthly assessment has not been finalised. It can stay pending while identity, income, banking, UIF, NSFAS, or other checks are still running.

Do not appeal a pending month. Wait for the result to update first.

If Your SRD Application Is Referred

Referred means the month needs extra checks before it can be finalised. This can be linked to identity, profile, phone number, banking, e-KYC, or biometric verification.

Use the referred-status guide if your result shows referred and you need to clear the extra verification.

SRD Application Details That Must Match

Wrong or outdated details can cause status problems, OTP issues, identity checks, banking problems, or delayed updates.

Phone number The cellphone number must match the SRD application so OTPs and SMS links reach you.
Banking details Payment details must belong to you and must pass verification before payment can continue.
Identity details Name, surname, ID details, and verification records must match the correct applicant.

  • Do not appeal before reading the exact decline reason.
  • Do not share OTPs, bank PINs, app passwords, card details, or SMS links.
  • Do not use random SRD links from WhatsApp groups or social media comments.
  • Do not assume one approved month means every future month will be approved.
