SASSA Grants
SASSA grants are social assistance payments for people in South Africa who meet the rules for age, disability, child care, foster care, care dependency, war veterans support, grant-in-aid or temporary social relief.
This guide explains the main SASSA grant types, how they differ, the current monthly amounts, how the payment schedule works and where to use official SASSA services.
SASSA Grants Quick Answer
The main SASSA grants are the Older Persons Grant, Disability Grant, Child Support Grant, Foster Child Grant, Care Dependency Grant, Grant-in-Aid, War Veterans Grant and the SRD R370 grant.
Most permanent SASSA grants are linked to a specific life situation, such as old age, disability, child care or foster care. The SRD grant is different because it is assessed month by month and can show a different result for each month.
How SASSA Grants Work
SASSA grants are not all the same. Some grants support adults, some support children, and some provide extra help when a person needs regular care from another person. This is why the correct grant depends on the person’s age, care situation, disability status, income position and supporting documents.
Permanent grants usually require an application and supporting documents. SRD R370 works differently because it is checked repeatedly through monthly database and eligibility checks. A person can therefore have a permanent grant process on one side and an SRD monthly status process on another side.
Types of SASSA Grants
Each SASSA grant has a different purpose. Do not choose a grant only by the amount. Choose it by the situation it is meant to support and the documents needed to prove qualification.

SASSA Payment Schedule
Permanent SASSA grants are normally paid in groups. Older persons grants are usually paid first, followed by disability grants, then children’s grants. This order helps separate high-volume payments across different days.
SRD R370 does not work like the permanent grant schedule. SRD payment timing depends on the monthly SRD status outcome, processing, banking verification and whether a pay date appears for that month.
For the dedicated monthly schedule, use the SASSA payment dates page.
Which SASSA Grant Fits Which Situation?
A useful way to understand SASSA grants is to look at the life situation first. The amount matters, but the qualifying reason matters more.
| Situation | Likely Grant to Check | Important Note |
|---|---|---|
| You are 60 or older | Older Persons Grant | SASSA will still check qualification rules and income limits. |
| You are an adult with a disability | Disability Grant | A medical assessment is usually part of the process. |
| You care for a child under 18 | Child Support Grant | The caregiver and child must meet the grant rules. |
| A child is placed in your foster care | Foster Child Grant | A valid court order is central to this grant. |
| A child needs full-time special care | Care Dependency Grant | The child’s disability and care needs must be assessed. |
| You already receive a qualifying grant and need regular care | Grant-in-Aid | This is an additional grant, not a stand-alone main grant. |
| You need temporary relief and do not receive another qualifying income support | SRD R370 | SRD is assessed month by month and can change per month. |
How to Apply for a SASSA Grant
Permanent grant applications usually need proof of identity, supporting documents and information that helps SASSA confirm the applicant’s situation. The required documents are not identical for every grant.
- Choose the grant that matches the person’s situation.
- Check the documents needed for that grant type.
- Apply through SASSA or the official SASSA services route where available.
- Keep proof of application and any reference details.
- Follow up if SASSA requests more information or documents.
Official online services are available through the SASSA services portal. Some cases may still require help from a SASSA office or official contact channel.
Why SRD R370 Is Different From Other SASSA Grants
SRD R370 often causes confusion because it is a SASSA-related grant, but it does not behave exactly like permanent grants. A permanent grant may continue once approved, subject to reviews and rules. SRD is checked for each month, so the same person may see different outcomes in different months.
This is why SRD users often see words such as approved, pending, declined or referred. Those words relate to the monthly SRD status process, not necessarily to every other SASSA grant.
Common SASSA Grant Problems
Many grant problems are caused by missing documents, changed banking details, changed cellphone numbers, income checks, identity verification issues or misunderstanding which grant process applies.
