Who Qualifies for the War Veterans Grant?

The War Veterans Grant is a narrow grant. It is not for every person who served in a modern military structure. SASSA’s war veterans grant rules are linked to specific historical wars and the applicant’s age, disability, residence and financial position.

War Service Rule

The War Veterans Grant is tied to specific historical war service. The applicant must have fought in one of the wars recognised for this grant route: the First World War, the Second World War or the Korean War.

This means the grant is different from general military veterans benefits. A person may be a military veteran in a broader sense, but that does not automatically mean they qualify for the SASSA War Veterans Grant.

War Veterans Grant vs Military Veterans Benefits

The SASSA War Veterans Grant should not be confused with broader military veterans benefits handled through military veterans channels. SASSA focuses on the social grant rules, while military veterans programmes may have their own registration, database and benefit processes.

For military veterans benefits outside the SASSA grant system, use the Department of Military Veterans as the official starting point.

War Veterans Grant Means Test

The means test checks whether the applicant’s income and assets are within the allowed limits. If the applicant is married, SASSA also considers the spouse’s income and assets.

This means a person can meet the war service and age requirement, but still not qualify if the means test is not met.

Documents You May Need

SASSA may ask for documents that confirm identity, war service, residence, income, assets, marital status and banking information. The exact documents can depend on the applicant’s situation.

How to Apply for the War Veterans Grant

Apply through SASSA or an official SASSA services channel. The applicant should prepare identity documents, war service proof and any financial or medical documents SASSA may need.

1. Confirm that the applicant fought in the First World War, Second World War or Korean War.
2. Confirm that the applicant is 60 or older, or disabled.
3. Prepare identity, war service, income, marital and banking documents.
4. Apply through SASSA or the official SASSA services route where available.
5. Keep proof of application.
6. Respond if SASSA asks for extra documents, verification or review information.

War Veterans Grant Payment Schedule

War Veterans Grant payments are usually treated with the older persons payment group in SASSA’s monthly permanent grant payment cycle.

War Veterans Grant and Grant-in-Aid

Some War Veterans Grant beneficiaries may need regular care from another person because they cannot care for themselves. In that situation, Grant-in-Aid may be relevant.

Grant-in-Aid is not a replacement for the War Veterans Grant. It is extra support linked to a qualifying main grant, such as the War Veterans Grant, Older Persons Grant or Disability Grant.

Reviews, Suspension and Changes

SASSA can review a War Veterans Grant to confirm that the beneficiary still qualifies. A review may look at income, assets, address details, care situation and whether the beneficiary remains entitled to receive the grant.

A grant can be suspended or stopped if official requirements are not met, false information was supplied, review requests are ignored, the beneficiary’s circumstances change, or the beneficiary is admitted to a fully state-funded institution.
