Disability Grant

SASSA Disability Grant

The Disability Grant is a monthly SASSA grant for qualifying adults whose disability affects their ability to work and support themselves.

This guide explains the current amount, who qualifies, medical assessment rules, temporary and permanent disability grants, documents, application steps and payment schedule.

Disability Grant Quick Answer

The Disability Grant is for qualifying people aged 18 to 59 who live in South Africa, meet the status rules, pass the means test and have a medical or assessment report confirming the impact of the disability.

From April 2026, the Disability Grant is R2,400 per month.

Disability Grant Amount

The Disability Grant has a maximum monthly amount. The amount may be affected by the means test, so the maximum amount does not always mean every applicant automatically receives the full grant.

Grant Monthly Amount What It Means
Disability Grant Up to R2,400 Maximum monthly amount from April 2026.

Grant amounts can change after official budget or SASSA announcements. Always confirm important payment information through official sources.

Who Qualifies for the Disability Grant?

The Disability Grant is not approved only because a person has a health condition. SASSA checks age, residence, legal status, medical assessment, income, assets and whether the applicant already receives another grant for themselves.

Age requirement You must be between 18 and 59 years old.
Residence requirement You must live in South Africa.
Status requirement You must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee.
Medical assessment You must submit a medical or assessment report confirming the impact of the disability.
Means test You and your spouse, if married, must meet the SASSA means test.
No duplicate personal grant You must not already receive another social grant for yourself.

Disability Grant Medical Assessment

The medical assessment is one of the most important parts of the Disability Grant application. SASSA needs a medical or assessment report that confirms how the disability affects the applicant.

The assessment report must be recent. SASSA guidance says the medical assessment must not be older than 3 months at the date of application.

Important: a diagnosis alone may not be enough. SASSA needs to understand the impact of the disability on the applicant’s ability to work and support themselves.

Temporary vs Permanent Disability Grant

Disability grants can be temporary or permanent depending on the expected duration and impact of the disability. This does not mean SASSA never reviews a permanent grant. It means the disability is assessed differently.

Type Meaning Practical Note
Temporary Disability Grant Used where the disability is expected to last for a limited period. SASSA may approve it for a period and require reassessment later.
Permanent Disability Grant Used where the disability is expected to be long-term or permanent. The grant can still be reviewed by SASSA under official rules.

Disability Grant Means Test

The means test checks whether the applicant’s income and assets are within the allowed limits. If the applicant is married, SASSA also considers the spouse’s income and assets.

This is why two checks matter at the same time: the medical assessment checks the disability impact, while the means test checks financial qualification.

Simple rule: the medical report supports the disability part, but the means test helps decide whether the applicant qualifies financially.

Documents You May Need

SASSA may ask for documents that confirm identity, disability impact, marital status, income, assets, residence and banking information. The exact documents can depend on the applicant’s situation.

  • South African ID document or accepted identity document.
  • Medical or assessment report confirming the impact of the disability.
  • Proof of marital status, if relevant.
  • Proof of income, pension or financial support, if any.
  • Proof of assets, where requested.
  • Proof of residence, where requested.
  • Banking details or payment method information.
  • Any extra documents SASSA requests during the application.
Do not submit fake documents. If documents are missing, ask SASSA which alternative proof or affidavit can be used.

How to Apply for the Disability Grant

Apply through SASSA or an official SASSA services channel. The applicant should prepare identity documents, medical assessment documents and any financial documents SASSA may need for the means test.

  1. Confirm that you are between 18 and 59 years old.
  2. Prepare your identity, medical, income, marital and banking documents.
  3. Complete the required medical assessment route as directed by SASSA.
  4. Apply through SASSA or the official SASSA services portal where available.
  5. Keep proof of application.
  6. Respond if SASSA asks for extra documents, assessment information or verification.

Official online services are available through the SASSA services portal.

How Long Does the Disability Grant Take?

A Disability Grant application can take time because SASSA must check identity, medical assessment information, financial qualification and supporting documents.

If the application is approved, SASSA will advise the applicant of the outcome. If it is rejected, the applicant should be informed and can follow the official reconsideration or appeal route where applicable.

Disability Grant Payment Schedule

Disability grants are normally paid after older persons grants and before children’s grants in SASSA’s monthly permanent grant payment cycle.

Use the SASSA payment dates page to check the full 2026/27 payment calendar.

Payment note: once the money is available in your account, you do not have to withdraw it on the exact payment day.

Disability Grant and Grant-in-Aid

Some Disability Grant beneficiaries need regular care from another person because they cannot care for themselves. In that situation, Grant-in-Aid may be relevant.

Grant-in-Aid is not a replacement for the Disability Grant. It is extra support linked to a qualifying main grant, such as the Disability Grant, Older Persons Grant or War Veterans Grant.

What If the Person With a Disability Is Under 18?

The Disability Grant is for adults aged 18 to 59. If the person needing care is a child under 18 with a severe disability, the more relevant grant may be the Care Dependency Grant.

This distinction matters because adult disability support and child care dependency support use different application routes and requirements.

Reviews, Suspension and Changes

SASSA can review a Disability Grant to confirm that the beneficiary still qualifies. A review may look at medical information, income, assets, address details and whether the beneficiary’s circumstances have changed.

A grant can be suspended or stopped if official requirements are not met, false information was supplied, review requests are ignored, or the beneficiary’s circumstances change.

Keep details updated: tell SASSA when your address, banking details, income, assets, marital status or medical/care situation changes.

Common Disability Grant Problems

Medical report too old The medical or assessment report must be recent enough for the application.
Assessment not clear SASSA may need clearer information about how the disability affects work and daily life.
Means test issue The application may fail if income or assets are above the allowed limit.
Wrong grant route Children under 18 with severe disabilities usually fall under care dependency, not the adult Disability Grant.
