Lost ID Replacement
If your South African ID is lost, stolen or damaged, you may need to apply for a replacement ID and, if urgent, ask Home Affairs about a Temporary Identity Certificate.
gov.za says South Africans aged 16 and older may apply for an identity document. Lost, damaged or stolen ID issues are handled through Home Affairs routes.

Report a Scam
Scam reporting depends on what happened. If money was stolen from your bank account, contact your bank immediately. If a crime occurred, report it to SAPS. If identity documents were stolen, protect your identity and report the document loss through the correct issuing authority.
gov.za says victims of crime must report the incident at the nearest South African police station, and emergencies can be reported on 10111. Anonymous crime reports can be made to Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

Documents and Proof to Keep
Legal, consumer, debt, ID and scam issues are easier to follow up when you keep proof. Do not delete messages, receipts or reference numbers too early.
- Receipts, invoices, contracts or proof of payment.
- SMS messages, WhatsApp chats, emails or screenshots.
- Supplier names, phone numbers, email addresses and website links.
- Account numbers, loan agreements or credit bureau records where relevant.
- ID copy, Home Affairs receipt or application reference where relevant.
- Police case number or complaint reference number.
- Bank fraud reference number if money was stolen.
- Dates, times, names of people spoken to and branch/office details.
How to Prepare Before Complaining or Applying
A clear complaint or application is easier for an official office to process. Prepare the facts before you contact the office.
- Write down what happened, when it happened and who was involved.
- Choose the correct route: consumer, debt, Home Affairs, SAPS or scam reporting.
- Collect receipts, messages, contracts, IDs, account numbers or reference numbers.
- Contact the supplier, bank, government office or service provider first where required.
- Ask for a reference number for every complaint or application.
- Save proof of submission and all replies.
- Escalate only through official complaint routes.
- Do not pay anyone who promises guaranteed approval, case fixing or secret access.
